Standing single-stem harvesting to minimize ecosystem impacts

SCF's standing single stem operation on Ts'zil/Mount Currie will be starting up again this fall.

PLEASE RESPECT CLOSURES IN THE AREA AND BE AWARE OF EQUIPMENT AND HAULING ON GREEN RIVER FSR

A project this complex is a heavy lift! We're grateful to the specialized crews from Integrated Operations Group, fantastic team and pilots at Black Tusk Helicopters, and great local contractors for ground operations from LizzieBay, JR Transport and Skytech Yarding.
Planning and management of SCF projects happens thanks to the leadership and vision of Líl’wat Forestry Ventures, Chartwell Resource Group and Ashlaur Trading.
Thanks also to Shane Roy for the great footage of this project, helping to showcase the innovative work happening in our forests!

What’s so great about standing single stem harvesting?

  • each individual tree is checked for quality before falling so no wood is wasted or felled unnecessarily

  • road building is very limited so disturbances to wildlife and ecosystem disruptions are minimized in the long term

  • soils and fungal networks remain intact as no mechanical equipment enters the harvest area

  • trees aren’t felled to the ground so there are no losses due to breakage

  • small openings in the canopy lead to enhanced growth in remaining stems and in understory vegetation

  • limbs and tree tops left behind provide excellent habitat for nesting birds and other wildlife

What can community members expect in the coming weeks?

operations will be under way on September 26th and run through mid-October, weather dependent

there will be closures in the Green River area for that time, though the FSR will remain open - see map below for closure area

there will be active hauling on the Green River FSR so please take care when traveling on the road

there may be some noise disturbance from the Sikorski S-61 for about a week, starting around October 5th
